Review followup : Retro Raw has just over 100 full-length classic movies from the 1970's and 1980's available for your pleasure, and it looks like they update with another movie once or twice a month. Each non-exclusive movie is roughly an hour long, and is available to watch in WMV format only, which can be downloaded or watched online in your choice of low quality or high quality. Each film is divided into 7-12 segments of varying length, and there is no option to watch the full-length movie at once.

The movies are not the best quality, but you do have to take into consideration the time period that they came from and the fact that they were not shot in great quality to begin with. The low quality viewing option is offered at about 575 kbps and 320x240 pixels. With the high quality option, the movies have bitrates ranging from 1.13 mbps to 2.21 mbps, and are usually 640x480 pixels. To be honest, it just doesn't seem like there's a tremendous difference between the two quality options. It definitely has the feel of watching an old VHS tape, and as for trying to watch in full screen, just forget about it. The audio quality was okay, but some of the movies have a hissing noise playing throughout, which was distracting.

One film that I thought was particularly interesting was A History of the Blue Movie, which takes you through the history of vintage erotica films dating from 1915 to 1975. While it doesn't completely fit the site's niche, it's a nice look at the origins of pornographic movies, and I think that people who would enjoy this site would enjoy this movie as well.

Navigation on the site leaves a lot to be desired. There are three different ways to find the movies. You can either browse by most recently added, browse by cover art in random order, or scroll through a list of titles in alphabetical order. Conspicuously missing in an option to search by star or keyword, which was disappointing, as well as original year of publication for the movies. It would also be nice to see some more background information on each of the films, instead of the short, often typo-ridden descriptions that are featured. On the page for each movie, I'd also like to see some links to the site's other films featuring the same actors or actresses.

The site does have two mini-biographies of John Holmes and Seka, which I thought were a nice addition. I wish more of the actors and actresses had been profiled in this manner, but perhaps more will be added in the future. Both of these biographies are available to read from the freetour page, which led me to believe there might be more inside the site, but that was not the case.

I was able to find multiple movies featuring each of these stars inside the site. While the banner features black-and-white pictures, it states that all the movies are in color. With the exception of the mostly black-and-white movie The History of the Blue Film, this is true.There are nine movies available to preview, each with 7-9 screen captures and a minute-long trailer, which you can either download or stream in your browser.

Impression : At first glance, it looked like Retro Raw was going to be full of black and white vintage erotica, but as the freetour page promised, everything here is in color. The layout is basic and the features are lacking, but if you're in the mood for some old classics, there's certainly quite a bit to keep you occupied for awhile. A paid membership to Retro Raw will also get you access to Seventeen Live with your same username and password.

Conclusion : While it's not the fanciest site around, Retro Raw stays focused on it's niche, and delivers a good variety of content. Those with a fondness for unshorn and unenhanced beauties will enjoy the movies that are currently on the site, but might get impatient waiting for the once-to-twice-monthly updates. Overall, I think it's worth a closer look from anyone with an interest in the movies from this specific time period or anyone who'd like to giggle at "the way things were."
